Weight Loss and Glycemic Index
Weight Loss goes hand in hand with glycemic index. Generally speaking the rate at which carbohydrates enter the bloodstream is known as glycemic index. This in many ways determines whether or not we are able to sustain optimal health and maintain weight loss. There is a loarge body of scientific evidence indicating that the glycemic index of a food is not a reliable predictor of that foods effect on blood glucose levels in the body, as well as cholesterol and insulin (The Zutphen Elderly Study- Eur Journal of Clinical Nutrition).
Weight loss programs that involve recommendations based on medical nutrition are much more effective and ensure patient success. Many dieticians and nutritionists receive no training in medical nutrition – the ability to prescribe foods based on a persons unique medical conditions. Suggesting that everyone should avoid high glycemic foods such as bananas, beets, carrots, lima beans and potatos because they may be “dangerous to your health”, is missing the most important factor in determining nutritional health as it is evidenced in the latest research. That is, the nutrient density of a food and the fiber content of a food is much more important than merely its glycemic index – especially when it comes to weight loss.
For the most part, Dr. Hoffman does not recommend high glycemic index foods as a part of his many weight loss programs. However, the addition of fiber rich foods and nutrient dense foods is healthy and conducive to weight loss. This is what Dr. Hoffman has seen in his clinical practice with weight loss patients. A few examples of these foods include:
- bananas
- apricots
- papayas
- carrots
- lima beans
The glycemic index of some of these foods above, is higher than other plant based foods. Yet, this does not automatically make them foods that should be eliminated. One thing to keep in mind: the majority of studies within the last 3 years, that look at glycemic index of foods, are looking at refined foods such as refined flours, and simple sugars. These items are very unhealthy foods that lack nutrient density and overall can cause inflammation and weight gain. Clearly, avoiding these food items can help to decrease risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity as well as help with weight loss.
However, these foods promote weight gain not merely because of their high glycemic index. It is also due to the fact that they are mineral and micronutrient sparse foods, poor quality foods!
As a general rule, you do not need to concern yourself with the glycemic index of a food if it is natural, fresh, organic, nutrient rich, fiber rich and part of a healthful diet. Of course, you need to consult with your Naturopathic Medical Doctor regarding precise medical nutritional protocols that are important to follow for your unique health concerns and weight loss goals.
